who we are

Working Culture Bread is a family-owned & operated neighbourhood bread & coffee shop in Rock Bay, Victoria BC. We’ve been slingin’ bread here since 2020.

We bake organic sourdough bread from scratch, along with a variety of rustic, delicious pastries, treats and sandwiches using only real ingredients. Our products are handmade with a focus on local sourcing and seasonality.

We believe that small business at its core is about community - get in touch to learn about the partners we work together with to make positive contributions, or if you have an idea you’d like to share.

FAQs

Is all your bread sourdough?

Yes, it’s all sourdough - which means we use a natural starter instead of commercial yeast to make it rise. Sourdough starter is a fermented water and flour mixture containing good bacteria & wild yeast, which contribute to the flavour and texture of the bread.

Can I have sourdough if I’m gluten-free?

Our bread is not gluten-free. Some folks who have trouble digesting bread made with commercial yeast may find they have no issues with sourdough due to the benefits of the good bacteria, and absence of additives and preservatives. Our bread contains just three ingredients: flour, water and salt.

Is your bread vegan?

Yes it is! Unless we are making a special loaf with cheese or another non-vegan ingredient added (which we will always specify), our bread is naturally vegan, as are our pretzels.

How come you don’t have a bread slicer?

There are a few reasons we’ve made this choice - the bread we make is best preserved whole, to be cut into right before consuming. Our high-hydration breads can stay fresh for days when kept whole, and start to dry out once cut. As we bake fresh every morning, the bread is too warm inside to slice for a few hours (with or without a slicer), and we bake loaves with allergens like nuts & seeds, which further limits how many loaves we could actually put through the slicer. With all that said, with our philosophy on keeping the bread fresh & the amount it would actually be used, it’s not currently a sound investment for our small business. Keep in mind that we are happy to hand-slice a loaf if you aren’t able to slice it yourself - just ask!
